FIELD WORK IN UKRAINIAN SEX

A Solo Play
Based on the novel of the same name by Oksana Zabuzhko

Language: Ukrainian
Duration: 55 minutes
Starring & theatre adaptation: Halyna Stefanova
Director: Anastasia Sosnovska (Panama)
Costume and Set Design: Ivanna Evian

Songs by Vika (Reproduction authorised by “Atiaba”, Lviv Music Collection)

Further information: fieldwork@ukr.net

The play premiered at the Kyiv Experimental Theatre on April 5, 2003 during the “Echoes” Festival of Solo Plays. It can be currently seen at the Les Kurbas State Centre for the Performing Arts (Kyiv, 23-v Volodymyrska St., tel. +380-44-279-5069). The play has travelled to Lviv, Yalta, and Toronto (Canada).

The dramatic adaptation of the novel brings to the stage an overtly candid monologue in which the play’s heroine attempts to come to terms with herself, her lover, parents, and friends. Fate has brought her to teach at an American university where an atmosphere of solitude and loss drive her to define her own life in admixture with the dramatic history of her nation. The play, like the novel, binds together the tragic and the comic, the “high” and the “low”, subtle poetry with the rough prose of life.

«Setting an English translation of a positively hair-raising Ukrainian poem, the 20-minute mini-opera delineates the poisonous fury with which Klytemnestra prepares to murder Agamemnon. The vocal line – rivetingly sung by Leah Summers – is menacing, agonized, chillingly deliberate; the astringent accompaniment, bristling and intense as each instrument pursues an individual role, underlines the horror».
